The following is issued on behalf of the Harbourfront Commission:

The final of the inter-school debating competition, organised by the Harbourfront Commission, to arouse interest and raise awareness of harbourfront-related issues among secondary school students, was held at the City Gallery, 3 Edinburgh Place, Central, today (May 10).

The debating competition was divided into two divisions, Cantonese and English division with 32 and eight secondary schools participating respectively.  After almost a month's competition, St Joseph's College won the title in the Cantonese division while St Paul's College was successful in the English division in today's final.

In his opening remark, Chairman of the Harbourfront Commission, Mr Nicholas Brooke, said that the debating competition is the first-ever event of the Commission that primarily focused on students.  He was pleased that the debating competition was successful in promoting understanding of harbourfront-related issues among secondary school students as demonstrated by the impressive performance of the participating teams over the past few weeks.  He also thanked the participating schools as well as the adjudicators for their support in the competition.

"The Victoria harbourfront belongs to Hong Kong people.  The Commission believes that public engagement is the foundation for the betterment of this precious public asset.  The competition is part of our on-going engagement work.  We hope that students will continue to pay attention to harbourfront issues and actively participate in Phase II of the Public Engagement Exercise for the proposed establishment of a Harbourfront Authority planned for launch in September 2014."

Chairman of Harbourfront Commission, Mr Nicholas Brooke; Legislative Councilor, Mr Alan Leong; Under Secretary for Development, Mr Eric Ma; Chairman of Core Group on Public Engagement of the Harbourfront Commission, Mr Vincent Ng; CEO of Solution on Wheels, Mr Vincent Wong; writer and journalist Mr Stephen Vines and Executive Producer of RTHK, Mr Tse Chi-fung, served as the adjudicators at the final of the competition.
