Government appoints Executive Director of Urban Renewal Authority

The Government announced today (December 31) that the Chief Executive had, on the recommendation of a selection panel, appointed Mr Pius Cheng Kai-wah as Executive Director (Commercial and Operations) of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) for a term of three years. The appointment will take effect on January 1, 2014.

Mr Cheng is currently Director, Corporate and Legal Services of the URA.

Mr Cheng was selected through an open recruitment exercise. An executive search consultancy firm was appointed to conduct the exercise. All the shortlisted candidates were considered by a selection panel chaired by the Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands). Panel members included the Chairman of the URA Board, the Managing Director of the URA, the Director of Lands, and one non-official, non-executive director of the URA Board.

Mr Cheng will deputise the URA Managing Director in corporate policy formulation and implementation, commercial strategy formulation and operations, and project management.

"Mr Cheng is recommended by the selection panel as the most suitable candidate for the position. We look forward to working closely with him in his new capacity in furthering the important task of urban renewal in Hong Kong," a spokesman for the Development Bureau said.

A brief biography of Mr Cheng is as follows:

Mr Cheng is a qualified legal practitioner. He was General Counsel of the URA between 2002 and 2005 and has taken up the position of Director, Corporate and Legal Services of the URA since 2007. Prior to that, Mr Cheng was mainly engaged in private practice.
