Appointments to Lift and Escalator Safety Advisory Committee

The Development Bureau announced today (July 10) the appointment of members to the newly established Lift and Escalator Safety Advisory Committee (LESAC) for a term of two years with effect from July 9, 2013.

Dr Otto Poon Lok-to is appointed as the Chairperson of the LESAC. The other members are 15 non-official members representing different sectors as well as two official members.

Commenting on the appointments, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said, "Dr Poon is the former President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the incumbent President of the Hong Kong Federation of Electrical and Mechanical Contractors Limited. He has extensive knowledge of the lift and escalator trade and rich experience in handling public policy matters. I believe that under his chairmanship the LESAC will provide us with valuable advice on the regulation of lift and escalator safety and the long-term development of the trade."

Mr Chan added, "The LESAC comprises members from the trade and representatives from other sectors, such as the property and facilities management industry, training institutions and consumers, in order to take in the views of various sectors on ways to enhance lift and escalator safety."

The LESAC is tasked with advising the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services on matters relating to the administration and enforcement of the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance as well as any of the matters referred to it by the Director.
