Lifts maintained by Shinefold taken over by other contractors

The responsible persons for all 234 lifts previously maintained by Shinefold Engineering Limited (Shinefold) have appointed other registered contractors to take over the maintenance of the lifts, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) said today (April 23).

The EMSD will suspend Shineford's registration as a registered lift contractor for six months starting from May 1. A department spokesman said, "We have closely monitored the progress of change of registered contractors for the affected buildings. We set up a dedicated enquiry hotline and deployed staff to the buildings to meet the responsible persons, and to attend meetings with the residents to provide assistance."

A lift incident involving the breakage of suspension ropes occurred at 480 King's Road North Point on March 2. As the Registrar under the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance (Cap. 618), the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services is satisfied that Shineford, being the registered lift contractor responsible for providing maintenance service for the lift, failed to ensure that lift works were carried out properly and safely. The Registrar therefore exercised the power to suspend Shineford's registration.
