Results of Domestic Water Consumption Survey released

The Water Supplies Department (WSD) released the key findings of the Domestic Water Consumption Survey on the WSD website today (January 24).

According to the survey findings, Hong Kong's average household per capita domestic fresh water consumption, excluding flushing water supplied by the Government, was 124.7 litres per day last year. On average, each person consumed 46.6 per cent of fresh water through water taps, 43.3 per cent through showers and 9 per cent through washing machines. The survey also revealed that households aware of the Government's water conservation promotion were more likely to consume less water per capita than those without such awareness. In general, households with live-in domestic helpers were more likely to consume more water per capita than those without.

The survey was initiated by the WSD in August 2011 and a consultant was employed to help identify the general domestic water consumption patterns in Hong Kong. Most of the fieldwork, which involved 1,028 randomly selected households, was carried out between mid-September 2011 and mid-January 2012. On completion of data compilation and initial analysis in mid-2012, the WSD consulted the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies as well as a number of non-government organisations before finalising the analysis.

The survey revealed that there is scope for enhancement of water conservation measures in Hong Kong households. The WSD will encourage the public to make greater efforts to conserve precious water resources.

The key findings of the survey are available on the WSD website (www.wsd.gov.hk).
