EMSD investigates lift incident at Yue Man Centre, Kwun Tong

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is investigating a rope breakage lift incident at Yue Man Centre, 300-302 Ngau Tau Kok Road, Kwun Tong.

The department received a report from the Fire Services Department at 2.17pm today (April 6) about a lift entrapment and suspected rope breakage incident at Lift No.6 of Tower 2, Yue Man Centre. EMSD officers immediately conducted an on-site investigation.

EMSD's preliminary findings revealed that one of the four suspension ropes was broken.  Upon the rope breakage, the safety protection system functioned effectively in stopping the lift. There was no injury to the two trapped passengers.

Rich Mark Engineering Limited is the maintenance contractor of the lift concerned. The last annual examination was conducted on January 5, 2012.

To ensure public safety, the lift maintenance contractor is conducting comprehensive safety checks on all the other eight lifts within the three buildings at Yue Man Centre to confirm their safe operation.  The maintenance contractor is required to submit an incident report to EMSD within seven working days (on or before April 18).

Another rope breakage lift incident occurred at The Seacrest, 1 Hang Kwai Street, Tuen Mun yesterday (April 5).

An EMSD spokesman said, "The department is concerned about the recent two lift incidents caused by breakage of suspension ropes.  All registered lift contractors have been urged to enhance the maintenance and examination of the suspension rope of lifts during periodic maintenance and the annual examination, and to arrange timely replacement of the ropes in accordance with the requirements stipulated in the Code of Practice to ensure the safe operation of lifts.

"EMSD will strengthen its inspections and take prosecution action against those contravening the Lifts and Escalators (Safety) Ordinance (Cap. 327)."
