Industrial accident in New Clear Water Bay Road

The Director of Water Supplies, Mr Ma Lee-tak, was saddened to hear of the death of a worker in an industrial accident at the New Clear Water Bay Road today (November 30) and expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. The Water Supplies Department (WSD) has contacted the family and will offer necessary assistance.

At around 1pm today, five male workers of a contractor were digging a trial pit on a footpath at New Clear Water Bay Road near Ping Shek Playground to locate a water main for connection work when an explosion occurred in their vicinity.

Four of the workers aged between 36 and 59 were injured and were sent to the United Christian Hospital.  Among them, a 59-year-old worker was later certified dead. The other three are being treated and one of them, a 52-year-old worker, was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The WSD and the Labour Department are investigating the cause of the accident. The site works have been suspended.
