LDAC supports wholesale conversion of an industrial building to education purposes

The Land and Development Advisory Committee today (May 20) supported a land development proposal to convert an entire industrial building in Fo Tan to education purposes.

This project is proposed by Tao Heung Management Limited. Apart from funding the conversion works, the project proponent will also provide the converted building free of charge to the Vocational Training Council, the Occupational Safety and Health Council and the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency to run a professional education centre for the catering industry.

Members supported this wholesale conversion project and agreed that this educational centre would help address the training needs of the catering industry and provide professional education and training programmes for practitioners and those who intend to join the industry. They appreciated the proponent's creativity and willingness to convert the industrial building with its own resources for wider social benefits.

Members also recognised that this conversion project is in line with the prevailing policy to optimise the use of industrial buildings to support Hong Kong's changing economic and social needs and that the proposed project would complement the transformation and regeneration of the Fo Tan area.

Members noted that the project proponent would adopt green building design and features during conversion to enhance the visual quality of the neighbourhood. The future educational centre would also practise recycling of food waste generated during its daily operations for organic farming and the feeding of livestock.
