Government appoints Antiquities Advisory Board Chairman and members

The Government today (December 24) announced that the Chief Executive had re-appointed Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan as Chairman of the Antiquities Advisory Board (AAB).

The Chief Executive also re-appointed 14 incumbent AAB members and appointed the following eight new members to the Board: Professor Chung Po-yin, Mr Henry Ho Kin-chung, Professor Ho Pui-yin, Mr Tim Ko Tim-keung, Mr Tony Lam Chung-wai, Ms Janet Pau Heng-ting, Dr Joseph Ting Sun-pao and Mr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung.

The appointments and re-appointments, which were gazetted today, were made under section 17(1) of the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance (Cap. 53) for a term of two years with effect from January 1, 2011.

The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, welcomed the appointments and re-appointments.

"Over the years, the AAB has made notable contributions to the promotion of heritage conservation in Hong Kong. The Board has offered valuable advice and suggestions on a broad range of issues related to the conservation of our treasured heritage sites and buildings, such as the review of the grading system for historic buildings, assessment of the heritage value of 1,444-plus historic buildings in Hong Kong, proposed declaration of heritage sites as monuments and the granting of licences for archaeological excavations. We look forward to the wise counsel of the AAB in its new term," said Mrs Lam.

Mrs Lam also expressed appreciation to the eight retiring AAB members for their dedicated service on the AAB.

The AAB is a statutory body established under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance (Cap. 53) to advise the Antiquities Authority on any matters relating to antiquities and monuments. It comprises 23 members (including the Chairman), who are all appointed in their personal capacity.
