Trenchless technology minimises impact of construction projects on public (with photos)

Trenchless construction technology, which has been adopted by the Drainage Services Department (DSD), will minimise the impact of construction projects on traffic and the general public, the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Chan Chi-chiu, said today (November 5).

To promote a better understanding of the technology among the public, the DSD will hold a three-day exhibition at Tuen Mun Park from tomorrow (November 6).

Speaking at a pre-launch ceremony for the exhibition today, Mr Chan said that the DSD commenced construction of Tuen Mun Western Trunk Sewerage in December 2009 to cope with the future development of Tuen Mun.

"To minimise impact to traffic and the public, trenchless construction technology, using two tunnel boring machines with diameters of about 2 metres, will be adopted to lay 4 kilometres long sewers," Mr Chan said.

The scope of the sewerage project comprises the construction of about 6 kilometres long trunk sewer from Po Tin Estate to Pillar Point Preliminary Treatment Works, as well as a new sewage pumping station.  Tunnel boring machines will be employed to construct the sewers at Ming Kum Road and Lung Mun Road in Tuen Mun.

Mr Chan expressed his gratitude to Tuen Mun District Council and councillors for their support.  He also thanked the consultants and contractor for their teamwork in enabling smooth implementation of the project.

The construction contract, which commenced in December 2009, is scheduled for completion in 2014.

The exhibition on trenchless construction technology, to be held jointly by  DSD and the contractor, will be held at Tuen Mun Park between 9am and 6pm from tomorrow to Monday (November 6-8).  A tunnel-boring machine to be employed in the construction work of Tuen Mun Western Trunk Sewerage will be displayed. In addition, the project team will introduce various trenchless construction technologies to the visitors.

Meanwhile, the DSD will also hold an open day at Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works on November 27 and 28. Members of the public can gain a better understanding of the DSD's work and services in respect of sewage collection, treatment and disposal as well as flood prevention by visiting the different facilities and items on display. They may also take this opportunity to visit the newly completed odour-treatment facilities, ultra-violet disinfection system, greening and landscaping work as well as the Water Reclamation Information Centre at the plant.
