Response to Tree Collapse Incident in Fung Mo Street

The Tree Management Office (TMO) of Development Bureau (DEVB) and the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD) send their best wishes to the driver injured by the collapse of a tree on Fung Mo Street in Kowloon City yesterday (September 11) and wish him a speedy recovery.

The collapsed tree is a 10-metre Acacia confusa located on a slope with a diameter of 350mm at breast height.  ArchSD recently noticed that some of the Acacia on the slope were not in good health, and started carrying out pruning and tree removal works in early September.  Due to inclement weather, the work was interrupted intermittently.

Staff of ArchSD and TMO of DEVB reached the scene immediately and took necessary follow up action, upon receipt of notification of yesterday's incident.

According to the preliminary on-site observation, the tree was already in poor health, as indicated by twig dieback, root decay and presence of fungal fruiting bodies. The tree collapse was probably due to failure at the root plate. TMO, DEVB, together with ArchSD, will conduct detailed investigation into the incident to ascertain the cause of the tree failure.

ArchSD will promptly inspect all trees in the vicinity and will take follow up action as appropriate.
