EMSD investigates lift incident at Eaton Hotel

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is investigating a rope breakage lift incident at Eaton Hotel, 380 Nathan Road.

The department received a report from the lift maintenance contractor at around 11.45am today (June 8) concerning a lift incident at the hotel on June 7.  EMSD officers conducted an on-site investigation immediately.

Preliminary findings revealed that one of the seven suspension ropes was found broken.  Upon the rope breakage, the safety protection system had functioned effectively in stopping the lift.  There was no injury in the incident.

Mitsubishi Elevator Hong Kong Company Limited is the maintenance contractor of the lift concerned.  The last annual examination of the lift was conducted on November 19, 2009.

To ensure public safety, the lift maintenance contractor has conducted a safety check of the other lifts in the hotel, and confirmed their safe operation.

The maintenance contractor is required to submit an incident report to EMSD within seven working days (on or before June 17).
