"New Links New Kwun Tong Design Ideas Competition" attracts creative entries (with photos)

The "New Links New Kwun Tong Design Ideas Competition", co-organised by the Development Bureau, Urban Renewal Authority and Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), attracted 77 entries. The CEDD will incorporate the design concepts of the winning entries in the detailed design of two pedestrian links for the Kwun Tong Town Centre project. 

Officiating at the competition's award presentation ceremony today (March 13), the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr John Chai, said quite a number of high standard and innovative design concepts were received. The department's consultant will use the winning designs as a basis to work on the detailed designs with a view to constructing two innovative and landmark pedestrian links.

"The Kwun Tong Town Centre project, one of the major projects of the Urban Renewal Authority, comprises developments for residential, commercial, government, institution and community facilities. The Government will take the opportunity to improve public facilities and the cityscape," he said.

The CEDD will be responsible for constructing two pedestrian links, with one linking Kwun Tong Road and Yuet Wah Street, and the other running across Hip Wo Street.
   
The competition was divided into two categories. The Professional Group was open to full members of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Institution of Surveyors, the Hong Kong institute of Planners and the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects. The Open Group was open to Hong Kong residents. The competition was well-received with a total of 77 entries, 30 entries from the Professional Group and 47 from the Open Group. 

The Chairman of the Jury Panel, Legislative Council member Professor Patrick Lau, said, "The standard of the entries was very high, displaying both diversity and creativity." Three winning entries from each of the Professional and Open Groups were selected.

Members of the Jury Panel were Professor Lau, Executive of Urban Renewal Authority Ms Iris Tam, Project Manager of the CEDD's Kowloon Development Office Mr Kwong Hing-ip, Kwun Tong District Council member Mr Nelson Chan Wah-yu, Partner of Philip Liao and Partners Ltd Mr Philip Liao, and member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Mr Raymond Fung. Highways Department and consultant Mott MacDonald provided technical assessments.

Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council, Mr Chan Chung-bun, Executive of the Urban Renewal Authority, Ms Iris Tam, and Kwun Tong District Officer, Mr Au Hing-yuen, attended today's ceremony as officiating guests.
