The Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr John S V Chai, today (February 23) commended contractors of six construction sites for their outstanding safety performance in 2009.

Speaking at the first "CEDD Safety Award" award presentation ceremony, Mr Chai said the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) attached a high priority to construction safety and emphasised that its contractors must provide a safe working environment for their employees and frontline workers so that all construction works would be carried out safely and effectively.

To further enhance the safety performance of CEDD construction sites, Mr Chai said the department had implemented a number of initiatives in recent years to foster a safety culture in the department and the construction sites. The initiatives included the launch of a new award scheme for good performers of construction site safety in 2009.

"The award scheme is tailored to the different sizes of construction sites undertaken by the department, and targets the contractors' frontline supervisory staff and workers."

There are two types of awards under the scheme - quarterly commendation letters and the yearly "CEDD Safety Award".

Mr Chai said the award scheme had been well received by the contractors. The scheme had been effective in promoting the contractors to put in their best efforts to enhance the safety of their construction sites.
