Electrical and Mechanical Services Department investigates lift incident at Westlands Centre, Quarry Bay

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is investigating a lift incident at Westlands Centre in Quarry Bay this morning (March 12) which involved suspected rope breakage. 

The department received a report from a member of the public at around 8.28am today about a lift incident at Westlands Centre, 20 Westland Road, Quarry Bay. EMSD officers immediately conducted an on-site investigation.

Preliminary findings revealed that one of the six suspension ropes of Lift No.2 at Westlands Centre was broken.  The safety protection system was activated and stopped the lift. No casualty was reported. The concerned lift ceased operation immediately.

Schindler Lifts (HK) Limited is the maintenance contractor and the original supplier of the lift concerned.  The last annual examination of the lift was conducted on May 24, 2008.
 
To ensure public safety, the lift maintenance contractor is conducting safety checks on the remaining 10 lifts at Westlands Centre to ensure that they are safe.

The maintenance contractor is required to submit an incident report to the EMSD within seven working days (before March 19). The EMSD will announce the results of its investigation in a month's time.
