Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and industry jointly promote safety and energy efficiency

The community can contribute to electrical and mechanical safety and energy efficiency in everyday life, following the motto: "Safety and energy efficiency begin with small things".

The Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Ho Kwong-wai, made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the "E&M Safety Carnival" in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay, today (November 15).

Also officiating at the ceremony was the Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Ms Anissa Wong.

The E&M Safety Carnival, being held from November 15 to 16 at Victoria Park, is a highlight of the E&M Safety Campaign.  The campaign, organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) for the eighth consecutive year, has become one of the largest public education activities in Hong Kong.

The campaign aims to enhance the community's awareness of safety and good practices in the use of electrical appliances and installations, gas appliances, lifts and escalators, amusement rides and railways, as well as to promote energy efficiency. Eighteen organisations from various industries have participated in this year's campaign.

It also encourages the community to cultivate safe and energy efficient habits from a young age.  This year's activities focus on engaging children and teenagers via the Internet, including a dedicated campaign portal (www.emsd.gov.hk/emsd/emsafetycampaign/intro.html), advertising on websites popular with teenagers, and holding an online quiz competition.  Publicity was also conducted via traditional media to ensure that the campaign messages reach the community at large.

Mr Ho said the 18 organisations have continued to demonstrate a spirit of collaboration in supporting the campaign to promote E&M safety and energy efficiency to the people of Hong Kong.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department is the regulatory agency which enforces various electrical, mechanical, gas and railway safety laws and regulations in Hong Kong.  It also promotes energy efficiency and the wider use of renewable energy.  Public education is an important aspect of its work. The department has been actively reaching out to the community via the mass media, publicity channels and visits to schools and elderly homes.
