The Water Supplies Department today (September 17) awarded a $660 million contract for the replacement and rehabilitation of water mains in West Kowloon.
The contract is the first of the 14 contracts to be awarded under stage 3 of the territory-wide water mains replacement and rehabilitation programme. It involves the replacement and rehabilitation of about 107 kilometres of aged water mains with diameter ranging from 20 millimetres to 600mm in West Kowloon.
The contract forms part of the department's 15-year comprehensive programme to replace and rehabilitate some 3,000km of aged water mains throughout the territory. It is envisaged that the stage 3 works, covering about 800km of water mains, will be completed by 2013, while the entire 15-year programme will be completed by 2015.
Assistant Director of Water Supplies, Mr Ng Chi-ho, said after the signing ceremony that with the implementation of the comprehensive water mains improvement scheme, incidents of water mains bursting and leakage causing inconvenience to the public would be greatly reduced in the future.
The contract was awarded to China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited. Work started today and is scheduled for completion in 2013.
