Secretary for Development visits Sham Shui Po (with photos)
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, took the opportunity of her visit to the Sham Shui Po District said today (October 22) to brief district personalities on initiatives under the Chief Executive's 2007-08 Policy Address which were particularly relevant to Sham Shui Po.
Mrs Lam highlighted that three out of the initial batch of seven historic buildings identified for preservation and revitalisation under the Revitalising Historic Buildings through Partnership Scheme were in Sham Shui Po, namely the North Kowloon Magistracy, Lai Chi Kok Hospital and Mei Ho House.
Through good adaptive re-use, the Scheme would not only give a new lease of life to these buildings for the enjoyment of the public, but also bring social and economic benefit to the district as a whole. These revitalisation projects intended for social enterprises to be run by non-profit-making organisations would also help create jobs in the district. Mrs Lam noted that the current proposal was very much in line with the views expressed previously by the Sham Shui Po District Council and the local community.
Mrs Lam pointed out that the review of the development intensity of property development on West Rail's Nam Cheong Station was also a direct and positive response to previous concerns expressed by the Sham Shui Po District Council and local community. She said that any revised scheme in future would also be subject of district consultations.
During today's visit, Mrs Lam toured the North Kowloon Magistracy and Lui Seng Chun in the Yau Tsim Mong District, which is also one of the seven government-owned historic buildings under the revitalisation scheme.
Accompanied by the Sham Shui Po District Officer, Miss May Chan, Mrs Lam then went to Ki Lung Street, where a large number of cloth and clothing accessories shops for both wholesale and retail sales are located. The area has become an important wholesale trading centre for fashion and clothing accessories, attracting a lot of buyers from the Mainland and overseas.
Mrs Lam also toured Pei Ho Street and Fuk Wa Street, and was briefed on the area improvement and greening works carried out by the District Office, Highways Department, and the Hong Kong Housing Society in the vicinity. These works include the erection of art statues at prominent locations, tree planting, provision of sitting out areas and widening of pavements.
