Open Day at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works

The Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works (STW) at Ngong Shuen Chau, will be open to the public this Saturday and Sunday (March 11 and 12), from 9.30am to 5pm. It is the world's most efficient Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment (CEPT) plant.

The Stonecutters Island STW, an integral part of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage I, is treating about 1.40 million cubic metres of sewage every day, equivalent to half of that produced by Hong Kong's population. It stops some 600 tonnes of pollutants from entering Victoria Harbour daily.

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) welcomes members of the public and interested groups to come and join this festive event. Various activities have been organised for the Open Day including video shows, a technical tour of the treatment facilities, a newly furnished information centre, exhibitions and enjoyable games for visitors.

Free shuttle buses will be provided at Cheung Sha Wan MTR Station (Exit A1), West Rail Nam Cheong Station (Exit D2) and Hoi Lai Street, outside Hoi Shui House of Hoi Lai Estate.

Members of the public who wish to have more information about the Open Day can visit DSD's homepage at www.dsd.gov.hk or call the department's hotline for the event at 2195 3488.

Ends/Thursday, March 9, 2006
