Aged Water Mains in NT East to be improved

The Water Supplies Department today (October 5) awarded a $4.4 million consultancy agreement to Black & Veatch Hong Kong Limited for the investigation, design and construction supervision of replacing and repairing water mains in New Territories East.

This is the fourth and the last consultancy agreement under Stage 2 of the Replacement and Rehabilitation of Water Mains programme conducted by the Water Supplies Department.  This agreement covers the replacement and rehabilitation of about 170 km of aged water mains with diameter ranging from 25 mm to 2,300 mm in Shatin, Tai Po, Fanling and Sheung Shui.

Under the Replacement and Rehabilitation of Water Mains programme, the Water Supplies Department plans to replace or rehabilitate about 3,000 km of water mains within 15 years.

Stage 1 of the programme, which covers the replacement or rehabilitation of 600 km of water mains, is already in progress.  In Stage 2, the programme covers another 750 km of water mains.

Stages 3 and 4 of the programme are expected to start in mid-2007 and mid-2009 respectively to tackle the remaining 1,650 km of water mains.

The investigation and design works for Stage 2 of the programme started in April, 2005, and is targeted for completion in early 2007.  The construction works are scheduled to start in early 2007 for completion in 2011.
