Works Departments strive to complete slope works soon

In view of the unsettled weather in the next few days, a spokesman for the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department urged the public to stay vigilant and keep away from the areas where there are signs of landslip and report to the Police immediately.

During the past three days when the Landslip Warning was in force, GEO has mobilised over 120 geotechnical engineers to carry out emergency inspections of affected slopes and worked closely with other works departments to carry out urgent repair works. Once the repaired slopes are confirmed safe, the closed area in the vicinity will be opened and public facilities being affected will resume normal.

By 5pm today (August 22), the GEO had received 146 landslip reports, while the Drainage Services Department had received 33 flooding reports.

"The government strives to improve slope safety.  The GEO will continue to implement the Landslip Preventive Measures Programme, which provides for the investigation of man-made slopes in a risk-based priority order.

"Since 1977, the government has completed the stabilisation works of about 2 700 man-made slopes," the spokesman said.
