Permanent evacuation of Fu Yung Shan Tsuen squatters

After assessment by the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, the area where a serious landslide occurred in the evening of August 20 at Fu Yung Shan Tsuen is considered not safe for inhabitation.

The slope failure, which resulted in one fatality, happened below a squatter dwelling on the hillside of Fu Yung Shan and released a debris volume of about 500 cubic metres.

The Geotechnical Engineers from the GEO have inspected the slope and concluded that the landslide area is posing an immediate and obvious danger to four squatter dwellings in the vicinity.

"To ensure public safety, permanent evacuation of the four dwellings is required," a spokesman for the department said today (August 26).

He said that the Housing Department would make arrangements for rehousing of the affected villagers. The demolition of the structures will be carried out by the Lands Department.

GEO's Landslide Investigation Study Team is conducting a detailed investigation of the slope failure and will determine if further action is required.
