Contract awarded to improve drainage systems in East Kowloon

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) today (May 11) awarded a $160 million contract to Leader Civil Engineering Corporation Limited for improvement works to the drainage systems in Tsim Sha Tsui, To Kwa Wan, Wong Tai Sin and Yau Tong.

The contract, forming part of a $650 million drainage improvement project for East Kowloon, comprises the construction of about 5.6 km of stormwater drains of 600 mm to 2,100 mm in diameter and other associated works.

Upon completion of the works, the hydraulic capacity of the drainage systems in these four areas will be substantially increased and the flood risk will be reduced.

To minimise disruption to traffic, the DSD will closely liaise with relevant departments including the Transport Department and Hong Kong Police to ensure appropriate traffic management measures are in place during the construction period.

The works start today for completion in October 2008.
