EIA study contract for HATS Stage 2A facilities awarded

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) today (July 26) awarded a $2.9 million consultancy contract for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for the provision of disinfection facilities at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works (SCISTW).

"Based on the views gathered in the public consultation carried out last year, the Government is planning to expedite part of the disinfection facilities proposed under the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) Stage 2A in order to further improve the water quality at the western part of Victoria Harbour," Assistant Director of Drainage Services (Sewage Services), Mr Hon Chi-keung, said after signing the contract.

Mr Hon said the EIA Study was the Government's first step in taking forward the HATS Stage 2A, adding that it would help establish the most cost-effective and environmentally acceptable means of disinfection for HATS.

"Targeted for completion in 2009, the disinfection facilities will further improve the effluent quality of SCISTW," he said.

The EIA Study was awarded to Maunsell Consultants Asia Ltd.

Details of the HATS can be downloaded from the website: http://www.cleanharbour.gov.hk.
