Open day at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works

The Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works, the world's most efficient "chemically enhanced primary treatment" plant, will be open to the public this Saturday and Sunday (March 13 and 14) from 10am to 5pm.

As an integral part of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage I, the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works now treats more than 1.35 million cubic metres of sewage every day, equivalent to half of that produced by the entire Hong Kong population. Since its full commissioning in December 2001, the plant has effectively stopped some 600 tonnes of pollutants from entering Victoria Harbour daily.

The Drainage Services Department invites the public and interested groups to join the event.  Last year, the event attracted more than 8,300 visitors. Various activities including video shows, a guided tour of the treatment facilities, exhibitions and games will be arranged for visitors.

Free shuttle buses will be provided at Cheung Sha Wan MTR station (Exit A1) and West Rail Nam Cheong station (Exit D2).

For more information, please visit the department's website (www.dsd.gov.hk) or call its hotline 2195 3301 during office hour.
