Contract for Extension of Shatin Sewage Treatment Works awarded

The Drainage Services Department today (March 8) awarded a $285 million contract to Leader Civil Engineering Corporation Limited for the extension of Shatin Sewage Treatment Works.

This is the second civil works contract of the $2.4 billion Shatin Sewage Treatment Works Stage III extension project. The first contract was awarded in February last year.

The works, which start today for completion in 35 months, comprise the construction of additional treatment facilities including inlet works, sedimentation tanks and aeration tanks.

DSD has adopted an advanced activated sludge process with nutrient removal and ultra-violet disinfection for the Stage III Extension to improve the water qualities of the receiving waterbodies.

At present, Shatin Sewage Treatment Works serves a population of 640,000 in Sha Tin and Ma On Shan areas which generates a daily sewage flow of about 220,000 cubic metres. In year 2016, with increase in population, the sewage flow is expected to reach 340,000 cubic metres a day.

Upon completion of the extension works for Shatin Sewage Treatment Works in phases from 2004 to 2008, the water quality in the areas will be improved to meet the long term development needs there.
