Voluntary maintenance of air conditioners

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has taken prompt action to co-ordinate with the local supplier of Carrier products for a voluntary preventive maintenance programme on certain models of window type air-conditioners for enhancing public safety.

The programme will start today (July 4).

The supplier, Carrier Hong Kong Limited, has taken the initiative to provide a free-of-charge preventive maintenance programme for specific models of Carrier including "51G9" (9,000 BTU's), "51G7", "51V7" and "51T7" (each 7,000 BTU's). The maintenance programme is not applicable to the models "51G9" and "51T7" produced after July 2001.

It was found that if the air-conditioner concerned has not been given periodical maintenance and is installed close to the sea or susceptible to salty sea spray, its capacitor might exhibit unusually severe degree of corrosion, which in rare circumstances, may pose a potential hazard to users.

A spokesman for EMSD advised consumers to contact the relevant supplier to arrange for inspection.

Details of the preventive maintenance programme can be obtained by calling the supplier's customer service hotline at 2688 2108 or by registering on-line at http://www.carrier.com.hk/
