Entrustment Agreement for Shenzhen River Regulation Project (Stage III) signed

The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Shenzhen Municipal Government (SMG) today (July 12) signed an entrustment agreement on the second river improvement contract of the Stage III of the Shenzhen River Regulation Project as part of their joint efforts to alleviate the threat of flooding in north and north-east of the New Territories and Shenzhen.

The agreement was signed in Hong Kong by the Deputy Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Mr Chan Wing-sang, and the Deputy Secretary-General of the SMG , Mr Jiang Zun-yu.

The Regulation of Shenzhen River, Stage III Phase II Contract B is the second river improvement contract awarded for the project and the first one was awarded in December, 2001.

The works, which will be wholly entrusted to the SMG, involve the realigning , widening and deepening of the Shenzhen River between Lo Wu and Man Kam To to reduce the risk of flooding on both sides of the river. The Man Kam To vehicular bridge will also be re-constructed.

The total cost of construction and management of the contract, to be shared equally between the Government of the HKSAR and the SMG , is about HK$215 million. Works on the contract will start in July this year for completion in January 2005.

A joint working group with representatives from both sides has agreed on the detailed arrangements for financial control, payment procedures, site security, and construction and environmental management including waste management in relation to the works.
