Peng Chau - a complete metamorphosis of a fishing village

Peng Chau, a small island on the south-west of Hong Kong, has undergone a complete metamorphosis into a well-developed community without losing its attractiveness as a traditional fishing village.

With the completion of the last two reclamation contracts undertaken by the Territory Development Department (TDD) recently, Peng Chau, one of the 12 areas in the rural district where development was first considered in early 1970's, has successfully transformed into a community with essential facilities to better serve the local residents and tourists.

TDD has started undertaking the development of Peng Chau since mid 1970's. Based on a feasibility study conducted then, a development plan for the Island was framed. A total of 14 contracts involving HK$480 million have been awarded since 1981 to bring changes to this predominately rural and fishing-based community.

After more than 20 years' development, with the provision of a total of nine hectares of land by reclamation or site formation, public facilities including a indoor sports centre, waterfront park, fire station, rural public housing estate, market complex, waterfront promenade and sewage treatment plant are built to greatly improve the quality of life of the local residents.

The Director of Territory Development, Mr Wong Hung-kin, and Chairman of Islands District Council, Mr Lam Wai-keung, today (February 20) officiated at a celebration ceremony which marked the completion of the Peng Chau development programme and the contributions from various government departments.

Other guests attending today's ceremony include Islands District Officer, Mr Chan Nim-tak, members of Islands District Council, Peng Chau Rural Committee, Peng Chau/Discovery Bay Area Committee, local dignitaries and representatives from various government departments.
