Scheme to encourage energy-efficient building design

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department today (April 15) launched a Performance-based Building Energy Code (the Code) to help local industry to design energy efficient buildings.

Building designers are encouraged to make the best use of energy efficient facilities in buildings and to achieve optimum building energy performance. Some of the examples of innovative building design are daylight optimization, heat recovery and use of renewable energy.

This is a voluntary scheme under the Hong Kong Energy Efficiency Registration Scheme for Building (HKEERSB) and is extended to all commercial buildings and hotels in Hong Kong.

Building developers, architects, property management agencies are welcome to submit design details of their buildings for assessment. A HKEERSB Registration Certificate will be issued to a building that has successfully met the PB-BEC standards. A registered building can also use the specially designed Energy Efficiency Building logo on their documents for publicity purposes.

The Code was developed in consultation with a task force with representatives from 17 organisations including professional institutions, trade associations, academic and government departments.

Enquiries on the Code can be made in writing to the Energy Efficiency Office of the EMSD on 11th Floor, 111 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, or by phone 2881 1562, or e-mail to hkeersb@emsd.gov.hk. Information on the Code and its guidelines are available at the EMSD website http://www.emsd.gov.hk/emsd/eng/pee/eersb.shtml.
