Government announces membership of Harbour-front Enhancement Committee

The Government today (August 31) announced the membership of the Harbour-front Enhancement Committee.

Professor Lee Chack-fan will continue to serve as the chairman. Professor Lee is currently a Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President, and a Chair Professor of Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong.

The committee also comprises 21 non-official members and six senior government officials. The non-official members represent different quarters of the community including professional institutes, green groups, harbour interest bodies and the business sector, as well as individuals from varied backgrounds.

The chairman and members will serve for a two-year term starting from September 1, 2007, to August 31, 2009.

A spokesman for the Development Bureau said the committee was tasked to continue to advise the government on planning, land uses and developments along the existing and new harbour-front of the Victoria Harbour; with a view to protecting the harbour; improving the accessibility, utilisation and vibrancy of the harbour-front areas; and safeguarding public enjoyment of the harbour through a balanced, effective and participation approach, in line with the principle of sustainable development. One of the specific tasks of the committee is to provide input to the Urban Design Study for the New Central Harbourfront currently undertaken by the Planning Department.
