The Government today (April 23) announced the appointment of the non-executive directors of the Board of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) with effect from May 1, 2004.
This comprises the new Chairman, Mr Edward Cheng Wai-sun and 17 non-executive directors including the four Government officials. The appointments will be published in the gazette on April 30.
Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands, Mr Michael Suen, welcomed the appointment of Mr Cheng as Chairman of the URA Board.
"Mr Cheng has extensive experience in community service, including Government boards and committees. His expertise and experience in business, finance and property development will be highly valuable in steering the work of the URA, which comprises redevelopment, rehabilitation, revitalization and preservation."
"We also look forward to working closely with the new Board in taking forward our Policy Initiative to expedite urban renewal," Mr Suen said.
"The Government is grateful to the retiring members for their contribution to the work of the URA, in particular to Dr Lau Wah-sum, the retiring founding Chairman of the URA, for his leadership and numerous contributions in both the work of the URA and the former Land Development Corporation over the years," Mr Suen said, adding that Dr Lau had laid a solid foundation for the URA to continue to pursue its urban renewal mission.
He noted that the URA Board members come from a wide cross-section of the community including the academic, banking, business, legal, property development and social work sectors.
"Possessed with vast knowledge and extensive experience, they will provide the URA Board with the needed knowledge and community input in meeting the challenging mission of regenerating our urban landscape," Mr Suen said.
All non-official non-executive directors, including the Chairman of the URA Board, are appointed on an ad personum basis.
