Following is a statement by the Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands, Mr Michael Suen, in response to the legal proceedings instituted by The Society for the Protection of the Harbour against the Government's decision to proceed with Central Reclamation Phase III today (September 25):

"We understand that The Society for the Protection of the Harbour has instituted legal proceedings against our decision to proceed with the Central Reclamation. As the matter is now subjudice, it is not appropriate for us to give further comment on the matter.

We have already undertaken a study regarding the Central Reclamation in accordance with the three tests laid down by the court during the judicial review in respect of the Wan Chai Reclamation. I would like to reiterate that rule of law is important to Hong Kong. We will abide by the law and any ruling from the court."
