Managing Director of the Urban Renewal Authority appointed

A Government spokesman announced today (October 12) that the Chief Executive has, on the recommendation of a selection board, appointed Mr Billy Lam Chung-lun as the Managing Director of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) for a term of three years with effect from January 1, 2002. The term of the present Managing Director, Mr Canice Mak, will expire on December 31, 2001.

A consultants' firm was commissioned by the Government to conduct an executive search for suitable candidates for appointment as the Managing Director of the URA. On the basis of an open recruitment exercise, a number of suitable candidates from both the public and private sectors were shortlisted for interview by the Selection Board.

The Selection Board was chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration and included the Financial Secretary, the Secretary for Planning and Lands, the Chairman of the URA Board and an Executive Council Member as members.

"Mr Lam was unanimously recommended by the Selection Board. He was considered the most appropriate candidate for the job," said the spokesman.

The Managing Director is the administrative head of the URA. Together with the two Executive Directors, the Managing Director is responsible, subject to the direction of the URA Board, for administrating the day-to-day affairs of the URA.
