The Civil Engineering and Development Department today (August 23) signed a contract with Tung Lee Engineering Co to commence Yuen Long South (YLS) First Phase Development site formation and infrastructure works. The contract value is about $132 million.
YLS Development is the third new development project to commence following Kwu Tung North/Fanling North New Development Area and Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area. It is also one of the major land development areas within the Northern Metropolis. Positioned as an extension of Yuen Long New Town, YLS Development is bounded by Yuen Long Highway, Kung Um Road and Tai Lam Country Park, mainly in Tong Yan San Tsuen and Tai Tong areas, covering an approximate area of about 224 hectares (including 185 hectares of land proposed for new development and the remaining 39 hectares of land covering mainly existing residential clusters or roads/nullahs to be retained, and areas zoned for agricultural use and green belts).
YLS Development will serve as one of the major sources of land supply to help meet the medium to long-term housing needs through comprehensive planning and improvement of infrastructure in the future. Upon full development, YLS Development will provide about 32 900 housing units for a new population of about 98 700 and will provide about 13 700 employment opportunities.
Major works under the contract include carrying out site clearance and formation (including land decontamination works) on about 3.3 hectares of land in the development area and making this land available in late 2024 for public housing development. The works under the contract will commence on August 29, 2022, for completion in 2025. The CEDD will progressively roll out other works contracts under YLS First Phase Development.
