Following the commissioning of Fly the Flyover 01 (FF01) in 2013, Fly the Flyover 02 and 03 (FF02 and FF03) were officially opened to the public today (September 16) to further unleash two unused spaces beneath Kwun Tong Bypass for creative, arts and cultural uses.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Development, Mr Michael Wong, said, “FF01 was the launch project of the Fly the Flyover Operation initiated by the Energizing Kowloon East Office (EKEO) of the Development Bureau. Since its opening, different groups have organised 235 events there and have attracted more than 210 000 visitors. With FF02 and FF03 commencing operation, more spaces will be opened up to provide additional venues for arts, cultural, performance and other activities, and also for the public to stroll around and rest.”
He said he hoped that the new facilities would help the Kwun Tong waterfront evolve into an energetic and vibrant place and create new synergy with the development of the district.
Works of FF02 and FF03 were completed early this month. The two sites provide facilities including a gallery, outdoor open spaces, multi-purpose rooms, an open stage, urban farms, a restaurant, food kiosks and a pop-up store.
The EKEO invited non-profit making organisations to submit proposals earlier and is now partnering with the HKALPS Limited to operate the three Fly the Flyover sites on a four-year tenure.
At today's event, Mr Wong also presented the winning award for Flyover Fantasy of the City Dress-up Public Art Competition today.
The competition, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was jointly organised by the Development Bureau, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners, and the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design. It invited professional teams to design mural paintings for some of the columns of the Kwun Tong Bypass.
The winning design, “Urban Totem”, features stories and characteristics of Kowloon East. Complementing the Kwun Tong Promenade, the murals were completed in August this year and have become a new attraction of the district.
