Construction Safety Week launched by over 800 qigong performers (with photos)

The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (May 26) joined 833 construction practitioners for a qigong morning exercise session to promote a healthy lifestyle and help achieve the goal of zero accidents in the industry. The event marked the start of Construction Safety Week 2014 and set a new Guinness World Record for the "Largest Qigong Lesson".

Jointly organised by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, Construction Safety Week 2014 was launched at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal today. At the launch ceremony, the Chief Executive, together with the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, and the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Lee Shing-see, led construction industry practitioners in a qigong session. They also presented Safety Leader Flags to representatives from different levels of the industry to help spread the message of zero accidents on construction sites to their co-workers, as well as symbolising that solidarity is indispensable in creating an accident-free working environment and enhancing worksite safety.

A large photo collage made up of smiling industry practitioners, their families and friends as well as other members of the public, which has been adopted as the logo of Construction Safety Week, was also displayed at the ceremony. The collage not only records their happy moments but also reminds industry practitioners of the importance of staying healthy to achieve the goal of zero accidents.

Construction Safety Week aims to promote an accident-free worksite environment and a more caring culture in the construction industry. Launched in 2012, the campaign has received support from employers, professional institutions, trade associations and labour unions.

Other activities of Construction Safety Week 2014 include a safety conference, visits to construction sites which have an exemplary safety performance and the 20th Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony.
