SDEV to attend Symposium for Waterfront Development Leaders in Auckland

The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, on the invitation of the Mayor of Auckland, Mr Len Brown, will lead a delegation to attend the Sea Edge Symposium for Waterfront Development Leaders, to be held on March 28 and 29 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Hosted by the Auckland Council and Waterfront Auckland, the symposium aims to bring together senior officials and executives from Auckland, Wellington, Seattle, San Francisco, Hamburg, Cape Town, Busan, Taichung City, Singapore and Hong Kong to exchange ideas and share experiences on waterfront development.

Mrs Lam will make a presentation on the vision for Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, and recent efforts and plans of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to create a vibrant and attractive waterfront for public enjoyment. She has also been invited by the organiser to lead a discussion in the session on "Turning Vision into Strategy".

Mrs Lam will take the opportunity to visit Waterfront Auckland, a council-controlled organisation of the Auckland Council established to lead the strategic approach to development across Auckland's waterfront, and meet with the Chief Executive, Mr John Dalzell, to obtain an update on its initiatives. Mrs Lam paid a visit to Auckland in May 2010 on the invitation of the New Zealand Government, during which she was briefed on the subject by waterfront officials. She will also meet with Mr Brown.

The Chairman of the Harbourfront Commission, Mr Nicholas Brooke, will join Mrs Lam to attend the symposium. Also attending the symposium will be the Principal Assistant Secretary for Development (Harbour), Mrs Winnie Kang, and the Deputy Head of Pre-Kowloon East Development Office, Ms Winnie Ho.

Mrs Lam will return to Hong Kong on March 30 (Friday).
