SDEV to visit Guangzhou

The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, will visit Guangzhou from February 18 to 19 to gain a better understanding of the city's work in urban development and heritage conservation.

Mrs Lam will visit a number of new development projects in Guangzhou, including Zhujiang New Town, regulation and restoration of Donghao Stream and the Liwan Brook, redevelopment of Leide Village, Pazhou Complex (Guangzhou International Convention and Exhibition Centre), Asian Games Town and Guangzhou South Railway Station.

She will meet the Director of Guangzhou Urban Planning Bureau, Mr Wang Dong, to exchange views on town planning issues.

Another aim of the trip is to study heritage conservation works and the revitalisation of historic buildings in Guangzhou. She will meet with Professor Tang Guohua of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Guangzhou University to share his experiences and insights in heritage conservation over the years. Since 2007, Professor Tang has been rendering assistance to the Antiquities and Monuments Office on the restoration of King Yin Lei.

Accompanied by Professor Tang, Mrs Lam will visit the Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen's Mansion and several historic buildings in Shamian to learn more about their preservation and restoration works.

She will also visit Guangzhou T.I.T. Creative Park and a creative art centre, the Redtory. Both areas were converted from an abandoned factory compound.

Also joining the visit are Acting Deputy Director of Planning, Mr Ling Kar-kan; Commissioner for Heritage, Mrs Laura Aron, and Head (Kai Tak Office) of Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr Stephen Tang.

Mrs Lam will return to Hong Kong in the evening of February 19.
