Yuen Long & Kam Tin River Training Works - Contract D

Kam Tin lowland, due to its geographical formation, has long been suffering from flooding. The farm land and village residences are seriously affected by the flood water in every rainy season. The original Kam Tin river, which is narrow and meandering, has insufficient capacity to discharge the high flow flood water.

Drainage Projects Division of Drainage Services Department implemented the Contract D in August 1999 for the purpose to alleviate the flooding problems in Kam Tin and Pak Heung Area. Contract D involves the construction of 3 km long 30m wide trapezoidal drainage channel from Kam Tin San Tsuen to Wang Toi Shan. To derive a harmony of appearance with the natural environment, the river bank will be surfaced with grasscrete on which grass will be grown to produce a scenic 'green' embankment on each side of the drainage channel.

Besides the function of flood alleviation, Contract D also improves the local accessibility by providing 3.5 km long 3.5m wide access road with footpath along the river banks. Moreover, there will be five footbridges and four vehicular bridges across the future river channel.

Construction works are now carrying out in full swing. It is planned to complete 80% of the dry weather flow channels before the wet season in 2001. The existing flow will then be diverted to the completed sections of the dry weather flow channels and channel base slabs. There will be immediate benefits in reducing the risk of flooding. By late 2002, the whole contract will be completed. The flooding hazards in Kam Tin and Pak Heung area will be alleviated.
