Seven contractors for works projects under the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) were commended today (March 21) for their outstanding safety performance in 2011.

Speaking at the third CEDD Construction Site Safety Award presentation ceremony today, the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Hon Chi-keung, said the safety and health of all site personnel involved in the department's construction works is always accorded top priority.

To strengthen the safety culture and standards at the CEDD's construction sites, the department has implemented a number of initiatives in recent years, including a new award scheme for commendable construction site safety performance in 2009.

There are two types of award under the scheme: quarterly commendation letters and the yearly CEDD Construction Site Safety Award. A total of 31 commendation letters have been issued to 14 contractors and seven of them were presented with the Safety Awards today for commendable safety performance in 2011.

The CEDD has introduced a new series of safety initiatives in this financial year, including independent site safety audits and regular caring site visits by the CEDD's directorate officers, aiming at further improving safety at construction sites.

"The Development Bureau endeavours to achieve the vision of zero accidents. We hope all participants will continue to work towards this goal," Mr Hon said.
