Secretary for Development celebrates Chinese New Year with singleton elders and welfare service users (with photos)
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (February 4) celebrated the Chinese New Year with some singleton elders living on their own and service users in a welfare institution.
Accompanied by Assistant Director of Social Welfare (Subventions), Mr Lam Ka-tai, Mrs Lam first went to the Ancillary Facilities Block in Tsz Ching Estate, Wong Tai Sin this afternoon and visited three singleton elderly tenants. She extended New Year greetings to the seniors and gave them gifts. Mrs Lam has been acquainted with one of the elders since her days as the Director of Social Welfare and she visited him from time to time.
Mrs Lam then went to the Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) in Welfare Road, Aberdeen. The Complex accommodates a number of day activity centres and hostels for people with physical or mental disabilities. Service users are trained to acquire basic skills in self-care, social and simple work skills and may be provided with residential care and facilities.
Accompanied by the Chairman of TWGHs, Mr Billy Leung, and the Chief Executive of TWGHs, Mr Stephen Ng, Mrs Lam attended a New Year gathering with mentally disabled persons and joined them in a drumming performance. She distributed lai sees and gifts to them and extended her best wishes. Mrs Lam also visited their art gallery and greatly appreciated the artwork and paintings on display.
Tomorrow (February 5), at the invitation of the Sai Kung District Council Chairman Mr Ng Sze-fuk, Mrs Lam will join a lunch gathering in Sai Kung and then visit some villagers at Kwun Mun Fishermen Village and St Peter's Village in Sai Kung. Mrs Lam served as Assistant District Officer in Sai Kung in the early 1980s.
