Civil Engineering and Development Department to award contract for Wan Chai Development Phase II

The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) today (December 22) awards its first contract for the Wan Chai Development Phase II (WDII) project at $2.314 billion.

The Project Manager of the Hong Kong Island and Islands Development Office of CEDD, Mr Hon Chi-keung, said the WDII and the Central - Wan Chai Bypass (CWB) projects had been planned with extensive public engagement.  Commencement of the WDII construction works signifies that the public's ideas are being turned into reality.  Mr Hon said the CWB would provide relief to the traffic congestion along the Connaught Road Central, Harcourt Road and Gloucester Road corridor.

This contract is one of several for the construction of the WDII project.  The works under the contract include land formation and construction of the CWB tunnel at the water channel in between the two phases of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and also reprovisioning of affected harbour-front facilities. The contract will create about 900 jobs in the construction industry.

The key purpose of the WDII project is to provide land at Wan Chai North and North Point for construction of the CWB.  Land formed under the project will be developed as a world-class waterfront promenade joining that at the new Central waterfront for public enjoyment.

The contract will be completed by end 2015 to enable the commissioning of the CWB in early 2017.
