Water Supplies Department launches Voluntary Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme

A scheme for all manufacturers, importers and other related parties to apply for voluntary registration of water saving devices with the Water Supplies Department (WSD) was launched today (September 10).

The Voluntary Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS), which is a water conservation initiative of the Hong Kong SAR Government, will inform consumers of the level of water consumption and efficiency of plumbing fixtures and water-consuming appliances. It will help consumers select these fixtures and appliances for water conservation.

The scheme will be implemented in phases for different plumbing fixtures and water-consuming appliances. The first product under the scheme is showers for bathing. The water efficiency labels of different colours will show four different grades of water efficiency with Grade 1 the most water-efficient.

Application for registration in the scheme begins today. All manufacturers, importers and other related parties in the shower business are welcome and encouraged to participate in the scheme. They should submit documents with testing certificates issued by recognised laboratories to the Water Supplies Department showing that their showers comply with the requirements of the scheme. With the commencement of registration, labelled showers will be gradually available in the market for the selection by consumers.

Information about the scheme is available at the WSD homepage (www.wsd.gov.hk). Enquiries about the scheme can be made by post, email, telephone or facsimile to WSD:
