WSD engineers to look at new water mains assessment technique

Two senior engineers of the Water Supplies Department (WSD) left for the United States today (September 8) to look at a new technique for non-destructive condition assessment of underground water mains.

The new technique enables inspection of the internal condition of the in-service water mains and detection of leaks and defects, by a CCTV camera and a leakage detection sensor inserted into the water mains, without affecting water supply.

The two engineers will participate in on-site condition assessment works of in-service water mains in Dallas, Texas, using the new technique and evaluate the suitability of its application to the water supply distribution networks in Hong Kong. They will be briefed by the Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) on its leak detection programme. They will also visit a water treatment plant and tour DWU’s maintenance facility.

During their stay in Newport Beach, California, they will visit a pressure management control valve factory and water utility companies to obtain up-to-date information on technology about pressure management and valve control.  They will also see demonstrations on electronic valve control and applications of related products.

They will return to Hong Kong on September 18.
