Construction of Lai Chi Kok drainage tunnel to alleviate flooding in West Kowloon (with photo)
The Drainage Services Department today (November 11) awarded a contract with a total contract sum of HK$1.339 billion for construction of the Lai Chi Kok drainage tunnel.
The project aims to solve the flooding problem in Lai Chi Kok, Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po.
The Lai Chi Kok drainage tunnel will intercept surface run-off from the West Kowloon hinterland and potential overflow from the Kowloon group of reservoirs and discharge directly into Victoria Harbour near Stonecutters Island. By diverting the upland flow to the Lai Chi Kok drainage tunnel, the extent of drainage road opening works required in the congested West Kowloon lower catchment urban areas will be significantly reduced.
"By adopting this upstream stormwater flow interception concept, the extent of prolonged and extensive road opening works for laying new drains in the urban area will be substantially reduced. Thus the inconvenience to the public will be kept to a minimum," Assistant Director of Drainage Services (Projects & Development), Mr Tsui Wai, said after the contract signing ceremony.
The contract comprises the construction of a tunnel 3.7 kilometres long and 4.9 metres in diameter from Chak On Estate to Victoria Harbour near Stonecutters Island, a stilling basin and outfall structure, six intakes and about 270 metres of connection adit tunnels, slope stabilisation works and ancillary works. Upon completion of the tunnel by 2012, the flooding risk in Lai Chi Kok, Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po will be greatly relieved.
Construction is scheduled to commence on November 17, 2008, for completion in 2012.
