Civil Engineering and Development Department tree planting day at Pak Shek Kok promenade

The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) today (May 19) organised a tree planting day at Pak Shek Kok promenade in Tai Po as part of its continued effort in greening and improving the environment.

Speaking at the tree planting ceremony today, the Director of Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr Chai Sung-veng, said, "We hope that through direct participation, the tree planting day can raise public awareness of environmental protection and people can get involved in enhancing the environment and conserving natural resources."

He said that the greening works under the Engineering Infrastructure Works for Pak Shek Kok Development project, including the planting of about 3,000 trees and 330,000 shrubs which covered an area of about 50,000 square metres, would provide a comfortable and beautiful environment in the area.

Moreover, he said that the construction of a 2 km long Pak Shek Kok promenade was near completion. The promenade, scheduled to open in late 2007, will provide a lot of facilities including landscape nodes, open-air cafe, refreshment kiosk, toilets, public landing steps and first-aid facilities.

Mr Chai thanked the Sha Tin and Tai Po District Councils, district organisations and local communities for their advice and support during the design and construction of the project.

Other officiating guests at today's ceremony included the Chairman of Tai Po District Council, Mr Cheng Chun-ping; District Officer (Tai Po), Mr Poon Tai-ping; Acting District Officer (Sha Tin), Mr Hui Kwok-sun; and Project Manager (New Territories North and West) of CEDD, Mr Thomas Thumb.
