The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has promptly co-ordinated with the supplier of "SMC" ceiling fans for a voluntary preventive maintenance programme on the fans' five speed regulators to enhance public safety. The programme will start today (June 29).
An investigation by the supplier "Shell Electric Mfg (Holdings) Co Limited" showed that the concerned fan regulators, which were manufactured from 1997 to 1999, might pose potential fire hazards due to construction defects.
The fan regulators, bearing the brand name "SMC" on the front panel, were supplied with models K36, K48 and K56 ceiling fans.
A department spokesman advised consumers to stop using the concerned fan regulators and contact the supplier to arrange for a free-of-charge inspection as soon as possible.
