Tapping water from fire installations is illegal

The Water Supplies Department reminds the public that it is illegal to use water from fire service installations for non-fire fighting purposes, and to take water through inside service not measured by meter.

"Offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $5,000," a spokesman for the department said today (February 1).

The spokesman noted that nine convicted offenders had been given fines of $1,000 to $1,500 for taking water from fire service installations for washing purposes last year.

Ten convicted contractors had been fined $800 to $4,000 for illegally using water from the street hydrants for construction purposes in Tsim Sha Tsui, Tai Kok Tsui, Cheung Sha Wan, Kwai Chung, Yuen Long, Sha Tin, Causeway Bay and Chai Wan.

In addition, 53 convicted offenders had been fined between $800 and $4500 for taking unmetered water from the inside service or government submain.
