Government appoints Urban Renewal Authority Executive Director

The Government today (November 10) announced that the Chief Executive had, on the recommendation of a selection panel, appointed Mr Calvin Lam Che-leung as an Executive Director of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) for a term of three years. The appointment will take effect tomorrow (November 11).

Mr Lam will deputise for the URA Managing Director in overseeing URA projects and two of the authority's operational divisions.

"Mr Lam is recommended by the selection panel as the most suitable candidate for the post. We will work closely with him in providing a quality living environment for Hong Kong people," a spokesman for the Development Bureau said.

Mr Lam was selected through an open recruitment exercise. A consultancy firm was appointed to conduct the exercise and the shortlisted candidates were considered by a selection panel chaired by the Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands), Mr Raymond Young. Panel members included URA Chairman, Mr Barry Cheung; the then Director of Buildings, Mr Cheung Hau-wai; URA Managing Director, Mr Quinn Law; and a URA Board member, Mr Peter To.

A brief biography of Mr Lam is as follows:

Mr Calvin Lam is a registered professional engineer, a registered structural engineer and a registered geotechnical engineer in Hong Kong. Mr Lam is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. For the last three years he has served as a council member of the Association of Consulting Engineers, Hong Kong.

Mr Lam completed his engineering training with a top ranking international engineering consultant and became a chartered engineer in 1978. He continued working in the engineering field and has worked with consultants and government works departments in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Australia.
 
In his previous employments, Mr Lam oversaw different areas of project and operation management including project study, design, execution and implementation, operation and quality assurance, staff resources management, strategic and business planning. His experience spans wide areas including infrastructure construction and new town developments.
